What is dry needling?
As defined by the American Physical Therapy Association dry needling is a skilled intervention that uses a thin needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate muscular and connective tissues to help manage muscular pain and movement issues. Dry needling is used to treat pain and dysfunctions in your skeletal muscles and connective tissue. It can help reduce pain, improve range of motion, manage chronic pain, reduce impairments and improve overall function.
Dry needling uses a very thin filament needle (0.18-0.29 mm) similar to acupuncture. Although the technique is similar to acupuncture the intention and purpose may differ. Dry needling uses a fine filament needle for the management of neuromuscular conditions, restoring normal resting muscle tone, increasing localized blood flow, pain relief and tissue repair/remodeling.
Benefits of Dry Needling
Dry needling is a modern, science-based intervention, which has an extensive body of research showing its effectiveness for various neuromuscular conditions. At Clench Physical Therapy our Doctor of Physical Therapy has undergone specialized training in safe dry needling application and is certified by the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy Dry Needling Institute.
How does dry needling work?
The underlying mechanisms of dry needling can be a bit scientific but generally its effectiveness involves the collaboration of your body, brain and nervous system to promote healing. Dry needling has been shown to impact the chemicals associated with pain by triggering signals to your brain to decrease the perception of pain and discomfort. It promotes blood flow to reduce inflammation and supports healthy tissue remodeling. Your therapist can explain more about how dry needling can help your individual condition.
